Mold Removal is often times best left to the professionals. Without conducting
a proper Mold Inspection and Mold Testing prior to the start of a Mold Remediation project will often times spell disaster. Mold Abatement can be complicated, therefore it is vital to know the extent of the damage and to establish proper containment before beginning the Mold Cleanup Process.

 

Structural Mold Remediation

Structural Remediation is defined as that portion of a mold remediation project that deals specifically with a building's structure and typically does not address a building's contents or HVAC components.

The method selected in remediation of different building materials depends on how porous they are. Building materials can be broken down into three separate categories. Porous, Semi-porous and non-porous.

Porous materials include drywall, ceiling tiles, insulation, particle board, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), carpet and similar porous materials. All porous materials must be removed and discarded during the mold removal process.

Semi-porous materials include wood, brick, plaster, cinderblock, concrete, plywood, and similar semi-porous materials. All semi-porous materials must be cleaned using abrasive methods such as sanding, wire brushing or other similar methods.

Non-porous materials include glass, plastic, ceramic, metal, porcelain, laminate and similar non-porous materials. All non-porous materials must be cleaned by damp wiping, HEPA vacuuming or other similar methods.

There are many other procedures that are necessary during the structural remediation process in addition to following the proper method of cleanup. These procedures include:

  1. Engineering Controls: Preventing mold contamination from escalating in the air in areas outside the immediate work area. 
  2. Containment: A precaution used to minimize cross-contamination from contaminated to uncontaminated areas of a building. Containment normally consists of 6-mil polyethylene sheeting, used to prevent cross-contamination.
  3. Air Filtration Devices: Air Scrubbers are used to remove airborne contamination down to 0.3 microns. Most mold is between 0.3 and 0.9 microns necessitating air scrubbers with HEPA filtration.
  4. HEPA Vacuums: A vacuum system which utilizes a high efficiency particulate air filter removing particles down to 0.3 microns. These vacuums are used to vacuum mold spores, preventing them from escaping back into the air.
  5. Fogger: A machine used for the application of Antimicrobials in the air of a contaminated building for the purpose of killing airborne mold spores.
  6. Dehumidification: A machine used to remove moisture from the air within a building structure.
