Mold Regulations

Mold poisoning is serious business. It can cause a variety of illness' including upper respiratory issues, chronic fatigue, infections, short term memory loss, and in extreme cases, even death. Based upon just these facts you would think there would be some sort of federal legislation that sets a limit on permissible levels of indoor mold exposure.

Unfortunately, the federal government has not set any permissible mold exposure limits or building tolerance standards for mold. In addition, state and local officials have been reluctant to enact any serious legislation regarding indoor airborne mold levels.

Legislation Regarding Toxic Mold

On a positive side, landlords in all states, but Colorado and Arkansas, are responsible for maintaining and repairing rental property, and this extends to fixing leaking pipes, windows, and roofs -- the causes of most mold. If the landlord doesn't take care of leaks and mold grows as a result, you may be able to hold the landlord responsible if you can convince a judge or jury that the mold has caused a health problem. A bill was introduced the state of New Jersey on January 11, 2011 which would require the establishment of indoor standards for exposure limits to mold hazards as well as certification of mold inspectors and abatement workers.

Most states have not passed any form of legislation in this regard. So at this time it is up to the mold remediators in the industry to govern themselves and perform mold remediation services according to the IICRC S520 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Mold Remediation. It is also their responsibility to properly educate (NOT SCARE) the general public about the dangers of toxic mold exposure. So for right now, it is important for you to sift through the abundance of information on the subject and come to your own logical conclusion with regard to your own individual set of circumstances.
