So you think you have mold in your home. You can smell it, but you can not see it. You've had a mold inspector out and through testing have discovered Aspergillus in the air. But even the inspector can't find it. So what can you do about it?

Let’s say a professional mold inspector was out and can't find any mold. He says the humidity levels are below 50% and the gutters are properly extended away from the foundation, the grading is correct around the property, there are no water leaks to be found, the roof is fine, and the flashing is good. Now what?

Here is where an air cleaner can be useful. However all air cleaners are not created equal. You must use one that has a HEPA filter with high grade carbon. The right machine, which utilizes both, can do a nice job of removing mold spores from the air of your home. Just be sure that the square footage of the space you are trying to decontaminate does not exceed the capacity of the machine.

Another effective device in removing mold from the air is UV Light. These lights are installed in the return plenum of your air duct system. They are maintenance free and can kill mold spores inside your air ducts. Of course you should have your air duct system professionally cleaned and sanitized by a reputable company before installation.

Just remember, there is always a reason why you have mold in the air. Even if you can not see it, it's there somewhere. However, if you've called in a professional mold inspector, or two, or three, and they can't find the source, cleaning and sanitizing your duct system, installing a UV light system and running an appropriate air cleaner or two can keep your indoor living environment tolerable.
