a proper Mold Inspection and Mold Testing prior to the start of a Mold Remediation project will often times spell disaster. Mold Abatement can be complicated, therefore it is vital to know the extent of the damage and to establish proper containment before beginning the Mold Cleanup Process.

 

Equipment & Supplies

There is a variety of equipment and supplies that are necessary to properly perform mold remediation work. It is important that the contractor you choose to perform mold removal is trained and has the necessary skill to use this equipment properly. Here is where a contractor's training and experience comes into play.

Below is a list of inspection tools that a mold inspector needs to properly diagnose your problem:

  1. Thermo-hygrometer: This is used to monitor relative humidity in a building structure.
  2. Moisture Meter: This device is used to detect moisture levels inside wood, sheetrock, and concrete surfaces.
  3. Mold Sampling Device: A machine used along with an Air-O-Cell Bio-aerosol Sampling Cassette to sample the air within a building structure.
  4. Sterile Surface Swabs: These are used to take direct sampling of fungi that is growing on a surface for analyzing.
  5. Respirator: Used to protect the inspector from breathing in potentially toxic fungi.
  6. Tyvek Suit: A protective suit used to prevent toxins from entering the body through the skin.
  7. Booties & Gloves: Like the protective suit above, booties and gloves help keep the inspector safe from contamination.
  8. Eye Protection: Used to prevent toxins from entering the body through the eyes.
  9. Pliers & Screw Drivers: Used to aid the inspector in inspecting areas hidden from view.

Below is a list of inspection tools and equipment used to remove mold during the mold remediation process:

  1. Air Scrubbers: Machines used to remove airborne contamination from within a building structure.
  2. Commercial Dehumidifiers: These machines have a larger capacity to remove more moisture from the air than standard residential dehumidifiers. Humidity is a common cause of mold growth in building structures.
  3. Fogger: This machine is used for the application of Antimicrobials in the air of a contaminated building for the purpose of killing airborne mold spores.
  4. Antimicrobials: A chemical used by professional mold removal companies to kill mold at the roots.
  5. HEPA Vacuums: A vacuum system which utilizes a high efficiency particulate air filter removing particles down to 0.3 microns. These vacuums are used to vacuum mold spores, preventing them from escaping back into the air.
  6. Encapsulants: A coating or sealant formulated to be applied over an existing substance in a building that will provide a permanent barrier between the coated substance and the living environment. These are used after the mold is removed from a contaminated surface to aid in preventing its return.
  7. Containment: A precaution used to minimize cross-contamination from contaminated to uncontaminated areas of a building. Containment normally consists of 6-ml polyethylene sheeting, used to prevent cross-contamination.
