Mold Removal is often times best left to the professionals. Without conducting
a proper Mold Inspection and Mold Testing prior to the start of a Mold Remediation project will often times spell disaster. Mold Abatement can be complicated, therefore it is vital to know the extent of the damage and to establish proper containment before beginning the Mold Cleanup Process.

 

Bathroom Mold Remediation

Bathrooms are a common place for mold to grow. They offer a variety of food sources such as sheetrock, grout and in some homes, carpet. The most common cause of mold growth in bathrooms are the occupants not running an exhaust vent after showering.

Some bathrooms don't even have a bathroom exhaust vent installed. What happens is, the humidity builds up after showering and it has no where to go. Therefore it remains in the room, fogging everything up and causing mold to form.

Another common cause of mold growth in bathrooms is a plumbing leak. Often times, leaks go undetected or are not visible since they may be behind walls. These types of leaks are hard to detect until mold begins forming on walls or other surfaces.

So how do we remediate mold from a bathroom once it gets out of hand? A bathroom remediation protocol will depend on the severity of the damage and the materials involved. Below is a worst case scenario of a typical bathroom mold remediation project. Bear in mind your problem may not be as severe.

  1. Fix any plumbing issues or other causes for moisture intrusion.
  2. Set up containment to prevent the spread of mold to unaffected areas of the home.
  3. Remove, bag up and dispose of all contaminated sheetrock, tile, insulation or other mold contaminated materials.
  4. HEPA Vacuum all contaminated surfaces throughout the bathroom.
  5. Clean all contaminated surfaces with an EPA registered anti-microbial biocide.
  6. Sand wood framing to remove all imbedded mold contamination.
  7. Re-HEPA Vacuum all surfaces throughout the bathroom.
  8. Encapsulate all contaminated bathroom surfaces with an appropriate EPA registered mold resistant sealant.
  9. Re-Insulate the ceiling in the bathroom.
  10. Re-Sheetrock, tape, spackle, sand, prime and paint with a mold resistant paint.
  11. Clean and Sanitize the HVAC system. Mold will often times enter the duct work in a home through natural cracks in the system as well as through the furnace area and return vents. This mold contaminated air is then circulated throughout the home. If laboratory testing confirms this, air scrubbers must also be set up on each level of the home to remove the airborne contamination.
  12. Return after several days to remove the air scrubber(s).
  13. Break down and remove containment.
