Mold Removal is often times best left to the professionals. Without conducting
a proper Mold Inspection and Mold Testing prior to the start of a Mold Remediation project will often times spell disaster. Mold Abatement can be complicated, therefore it is vital to know the extent of the damage and to establish proper containment before beginning the Mold Cleanup Process.

 

Attic Mold Remediation

Attics are a common place for mold to grow within a building structure. They are well insulated which often times causes mold to grow on the attic sheathing and floor joists. Often times a homeowner will not be aware of attic mold until they sell their home. This is when home inspectors usually find it and it often holds up the sale of a home. Other times it is discovered when the homeowner takes their holiday decorations or other stored contents from the attic, only to discover they are musty and have fungus growing on them.

and not worth the cost of restoring, therefore they should be discarded

There are several common causes for a moldy attic. One such cause is blocking the
soffits with insulation. When insulation is installed covering the eaves, airflow is blocked from entering the attic which causes mold to grow. Another common cause are the lack of gable vents or inadequately sized vents which do not allow for proper air flow within the attic. Another cause can be a broken attic fan or no attic fan at all. A roof leak is yet another common cause. These usually go undetected until the sheetrock ceiling below begins to stain or leak. By this time the mold is usually fairly widespread. Chimneys with improper flashing will cause water leaks and therefore mold to grow inside an attic. Finally, bathroom exhaust vents or dryer vents, which exhaust moist air into the attic, will cause mold to grow as well.

Below is a description of the process for removing mold from an attic:

  1. Make sure the root cause of the mold growth has been fixed before beginning attic remediation activities.
  2. Set up proper containment to prevent mold from spreading to unaffected areas of the home.
  3. Remove all contaminated insulation. All insulation should be bagged up in 6 ml plastic bags and properly handled and disposed of.
  4. HEPA Vacuum the entire attic space. This removes all loose contamination.
  5. Apply an EPA registered antimicrobial biocide to all contaminated surfaces to kill mold at the roots.
  6. Sand or Dry Ice Blast all contaminated attic sheathing and floor joists.
  7. Again, Re-HEPA Vacuum the entire attic space.
  8. Re-Insulate with R30 Attic insulation.
